I'm always a little bit suspicious of posh Indian restaurants. It seems like an oxymoron: Posh Indian. No disrespect towards the Subcontinent, but it is generally thought of as a relatively poor part of the world. Your average local curry is generally a cheap affair. So do you really get that much more by paying a premium? In this case, the answer is yes. The Dockmaster's House is to your average curry house what a villa on the Mediterrean is to a council flat in Wandsworth. It's in a whole different league. Beautiful , expensive surroundings. Renovating a listed Georgian building, no expense has been spared. The food is very detailed, with top notch ingredients and beautifully presented on the plate. Servers know their stuff and there is a classy wine list. It is expensive, but it's also a great dining experience-which is enjoyed even more when someone else is picking up the cheque. K.Hoosan

Who says you have to travel outside London to receive proper fresh food coupled with country charm ? You only need to make your way to the Isle of Dogs and the Mudchute Kitchen. Hidden away near the stables at the Mudchute Farm, this is the real thing. Eggs are collected fresh from the hens, smoked bacon used to roam free on the farm, and cheese and meat are smoked in their own smoke house. Much of it cooked on a wood-stove for a proper smoky flavour. Homemade baking is worth lingering over. Phillipa, the manager, and her team of volunteers, out perform many a professional cafe. Make a beeline. It's kiddy-friendly too.

The Gaylord

Yes, It's really called the Gaylord. Once you're done snickering in the back there, we can get on with singing the praises of this little hole-in-the-wall Indian in the deepest depths of the Isle of Dogs. Ride the DLR to the very tip of the Isle, just before you would cross under the murky Thames to come out in Greenwich, and you'll find the unassuming pistachio green surroundings of the Gaylord. Apparently it's Enrique Iglesias' favourite Indian in London, although one questions how much time he really spends amongst the council flats at the bottom end of Tower Hamlets. But if it's good enough for Enrique, then it's good enough for you.

Lotus restaurant is like one big happy family. The servers pop around to your table to exchange pleasantries and you might even get a joke or two. Many of the customers are regulars and have been coming here for years. Their Sunday Dim Sum is legendary and the lines snake out the door. No reservations, so you wait like everyone else. But it's certainly worth the wait. Made fresh to order. And there's no 'mystery' to any of it. Chicken tastes like chicken. Beef is really good quality. There's no wondering if the neighbour's dog or cat has strayed too close to the kitchen like at some Chinese restaurants. Just save some room for custard buns at the end. You'll be glad you did.

The Rinky Dink is the kind of place the entire Kerrang! team would hang out at after work if it were located in Soho. In Clapham, though,it makes a nice grungy rock'n'roll change to the other sterile, chrome plated bars in the area. Leather sofas and art deco wallpaper compliment fancy cocktails (try the tastebud-exploding Vanilla Sky, £6) and deliciously skinny pizzas. The place is busy on weekends, but makes for an edgier place to relax on weeknights.

If only every fourteen year old entered the world of music, drinking and going out at Catch, instead of the underside of a damp bridge with three litres of £1.09 cider. London would be a much friendlier city.
Catch is perfect: on the clean side of grungy, it books beginner bands off the MySpace circuit. They're the kind of bands who still hand-draw their posters and hand out black and white photocopy fliers after the set.
Incidentally, the name is no accident: the address is at 22. Although the majority of its fedora wearing, bleach-blonde clientele are probably too young to even get the reference.

There's something voyeuristic - uncomfortable - about stealing glances into a departed artist's private oeuvres. Classy central London gallery Sebastian+Barquet is currently hosting Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino's furniture pieces, and the skeletons contained within.

Perhaps the effects would have been greater had the twelve polaroids depicting semi-nude women (acquaintances ? lovers ? prostitutes ?) belonged to someone less obscurely famous. However, this invasion of post-mortem privacy of a stranger is somehow satisfying, even for the sake of fantasizing about what went on around the split seconds those photographs were captured.

Greater London Pubs: Islington: Buffalo Bar

It could be the appeal of being five metres away from the tube station, or maybe the 'secret society' feeling of descending a bland flight of stairs into a marvellous neon cavern of fairy lights, dimly lit tables and independent press scatered everywhere.
Buffalo Bar is the beating indie heart of N1, with regular nights such as the mutton Club (every first Friday) or Silver Rocket (every third) throwing two fingers up to the glitz and glamour of London's overpriced and overrated club scene and even Camden's sanitized pop-rock nights.

Some places are best experienced on drugs. Disneyland is one such example. The Macbeth, a seemingly nondescript pub in Shoreditch, is a close second.

It's not so much the decor (which is unusual enough; a fresco/disco mash-up) which throws you into vivid disorientation upon arrival, as the patrons and the musical acts. The former resemble a Carroll-style reinterpretation of the Bohemian scene of 1880s Paris, while the latter possess the unusual ability to perform as if they're still strumming away in their bedrooms.

The MacBeth is a disorienting sort of place, a pub-nouveau to visit for a taste of something weird and wonderful.

Expectations were set high for this Royal Society of Medicine exhibit. Images of 19th century medical illustrations and dusty ancient scrolls exalting surgical advancements emanated from the deliciously suggestive blurbs in the press.

In reality, Dreadful Visitations and Deliverances is a glass-covered shelf in the RMS library. Although some of the journal articles and books are mildly curious in an antique sense, this micro-exhibition bears little information or, indeed interest to anyone but the most fanatical student of medical history.

Rock 'Roll' Public Library

So, Mick Jones: born in 1955, learned to play the guitar, joined one of the most iconic British rock bands in history - the Clash. Also a self-admitted hoarder, he has collected oodles of memorabilia throughout his life, which he loaned for display at the Chelsea Space.

It is a rather comprehensive hoard. The relatively small gallery contains mountains of books, records, clothes, memorabilia, lyrics sheets,toys and games. In fact, it all feels a little bit cramped

For the devoted Clash (or 60s BRITROCK) fan, this would probably be a holy ground experience, with tears welling up at the site of torn stage clothes and original plane tickets. For the ordinary patron though, just mildly curious.

London Arts Digest. Mythologies at the Haunch of Venison.

Located just off the exquisite boutiques of New Bond Street, the Mythologies exhibition sticks out like a sore thumb. Although the theme of the show is the mythical and surreal, the exhibits on display might as well be exploring the topic of hallucinogenic drugs.

The second floor , in particular, defines the weird and wonderful of the art world. Light, paint, sculpture and taxidermy are used in unexpected and challenging ways. Paul Fryer's poignantly philosophical work is nothing but an egg levitating gently above an empty nest; while John Isaac's blend of bleeding internal organs and wood in a cube is frighting in a Bret Easton Ellis kind of way.

Definitely worth a look - admission is free, and the exhibits will haunt you for many days afterward.

Madness and Modernity at the Wellcome Collection is a very narrowly focused. Its subject, mental illness and the arts in Vienna of the 1900s, would be difficult to illustrate even for the most resourceful curator.
There are some interesting things on show; a schizophrenic woman's mad scribbles on an 1890 newspaper, sculpted heads of ' idiotic ' (microcephalic) brothers, an electrified cage developed for the treatment of depression.
Unfortunately, the scarce and disjointed exhibits are mildly curious, rather than fascinating. Not enough is explained, too much is assumed. However, it does raise interesting questions about ethics in psychotherapy and the morality of 'modern' approaches, which in a hundred years may seem just as antiquated as a lobotomy is to the present-day observer.

Mr. Charles Darwin seems to be the scientist du jour these days. From the No God buses to the silver screen production starring Paul Bettany, everyone suddenly seems interested. The British Library is no exception, with a small installation currently available to view for free to all visitors.

The exhibit aims to give the man behind the stern, bearded face gracing the ten-pound note, a personality. In his own, last-century way, the man actually had a wife, a family and a sense of humour. On the floor at the entrance, a tree-shaped outline guides you through Darwin's daily schedule. It's nice to, for once, see a man referred to as a man-rather than a faceless initial in a banknote.

Although credit must be given for interesting excerpts of information (from audio snippets to actual rare copies of scientific articles on display) detailing evolutionary theory research before and during Darwin's time, it is disappointing to not see more reference to the ways his theories were revised and adapted afterwards. Worth a look if you're in the area.

London's Slow Food Market is in it's third year. The premise, like most successful post Al Gore ventures, is that we all eat too much junk, don't care about the planet and put too many pesticides into our bodies. Basically, it's the hippie movement all over again, but with fewer drugs.

Thankfully, philosophy something you can leave at home when visiting this market. All you need is a rumbling tummy and a coin purse. There is food of all types, and for every taste. The decent- sized market area can be broken down into two main categories: food to buy, and food to eat, like, right now.

For the hungry punters, there's freshly grilled gameburgers, roast hog rolls (£4.80) but worth every penny and nondescript meat sausages. Wash it down with freshly squeezed apple juice, or hot mulled wine. For dessert, there is an entire van dedicated to chocolate ; or you could purchase an assorted cheese tray to share.

Walking around the gilded burgundy halls of Buckingham Palace, it's hard not to wonder whether the theory of evolution is keeping some secrets. For example, the fact that all people living five centuries prior were impossibly pale, muscular, rosy-cheeked, and bravely rebelling against the laws of physical perspective.

The collection is a testament to the Flemish Renaissance: a period of economic affluence which saw rich art patrons investing heaps of cash into refining their artistic tastes. The results are beautiful. Masters of the time, including Bruegel and Rubens, are exhibited cheek to cheek; the interpretations of the school's art laws contrasting off each other.

As all things royal ,however , the admission prices are unjustifiably high . The exhibit is therefore best reserved for aficionados and eager Art History majors. Although, iconic masterpieces such as a "A Cabinet of Pictures" or "Assumption of the Virgin are genuinely stunning.

The amount of people comfortably chatting amid images of twisted genitalia and hairy limbs can either mean that we finally devolved the ability to be shocked; or that the current economic climate means we'll look at anything for free beer. Whichever one it is, the tiny Shoreditch gallery is absolutely packed.

"Lump Hammer Love Bites" is a contemporary grotesque exhibition currently running at the Concrete Hermit until 1st of March. Five artists, including Andrew James Jones and Dan Mudwig have combined their creative superpowers to compose the weirdest, funniest and confusing exhibit to hit the capital in years.

Their styles, although displayed in everything from collage to sculpture, are all echoes of each other. Here, you will find cut-out images of stretched anuses and oozing wounds re-fashioned into furry monsters' mouths and improbable creatures of all sorts.Bring a cynical sense of humour, but leave your breakfast at home. Well worth a visit.

London in the grips of chaos.

Last Monday, February 2nd, ten inches of snow casually floated on top of the Capital. Residents of Moscow or Helsinki would have brewed gluhwein and ran off to build snowmen, but of course this need not apply to wide-eyed, paranoid Londoners.
Public transport has effectively ground to a halt, with the bus service cancelled,
many tube lines suspended and cab drivers inching their way along icy roads at speeds barely surpassing a limp chipmunk's. The national press, meanwhile, were getting their proverbial underwear in a twist over the 'awful' weather and catastrophic conditions.
The 17 year-old who nearly drowned in a river notwithstanding, the situation is truly a small light at the end of a depressing tunnel. This week, the city will look more beautiful than it has all year. Why not take advantage of the guilt-free days off and head off to your local park for a breath of fresh air, some memorable snaps, and perhaps even an unapologetic snowball fight.

Compared to some of the world's capitals, London's Chinatown is a bit of a disappointment. It's fairly small, barely atmospheric and about as ethnic as a "Mind the Gap" t-shirt. This Sunday though, the small district will come alive with bursting colours, fireworks, crackers, music and plenty of food to go around. Welcome to the Year of the Ox !
The actual Chuxi, Chinese New Year, falls on January 26th this year, though
understandably postponed until Sunday. In that sense February 1st is actually PoWu,
"fifth day of the New Year",marked with the custom of starting the day with a filling meal of Jiaozi dumplings. Why not pay a visit to a local Chinese takeaway before heading off to really get into the mood for tradition?
The celebrations officially start at noon with iconic Lion and Dragon dances, and will presumably continue until the punters can no longer maintain vertical posture. Fortunately, the colourful displays and diverse range of ethnic performers will not be limited to Chinatown alone, and will include a variety of locations around London. The familiar red lanterns (symbolocally used to frighten away Niang, the New Year monster) and sounds of firecrackers are easy markers to follow, and will be seen in Trafalgar and Leicester squares, Shaftsbury Avenue and, of course, Chinatown.
